AOTPWe have a new committee for 2017/2018!

Some enthusiastic people have taken up positions on the committee, enabling us to continue our work.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the HSUWA for kindly allowing us to use their facilities to hold our committee meetings. The committee feel that a close relationship with the AOTP and the HSU is the best way forward for a bright future for Anaesthetic Technicians.

Outgoing Treasurer

aotpDue to work and personal commitments, I am no longer able to commit to the role of Treasurer and will be handing the work over to Sheila Su (current student rep) who will perform the role on a temporary basis.

If any members are interested to be on the committee, now is the time to express your interest. Contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or speak to your local committee member. Thank you for your patience and support whilst I learnt this role. I look forward to participating as one of the committee members for the remaining year.

To further secure our working relationships with the anaesthetists, we now have our monthly committee meetings at the ANZCA/ASA offices. This is hugely beneficial for AOTP and of course the committee members who attend the meetings every month, usually after work. - Linda Long.

Presidents Report September 2016

With increasing membership numbers it is now likely an education event will be feasible for November 2016.

Enthusiastic new committee members are always hard to come by, and requests have consistently fallen on deaf ears, however without new input and interest the writing is on the wall for the AOTP. Carrying on with our commitment to ongoing education, our immediate short term focus has now turned to strengthening educational resources on our website specifically for “members only” access.

Companies have been approached for material pertaining to anaesthesia equipment and techniques, in particular to help meet the student technicians learning objectives.

AOTP President

Presidents Report

AOTPJune is traditionally a quiet month for the AOTP, consolidating for the coming year’s events.

The local ANZCA have recently had their annual change of committee, and we have managed to make contact with two consultants willing to join our association, in a liaison capacity between the two groups.  Dr Scott Douglas and Dr John Martyr (WA ANZCA Chairperson) have accepted our offer of honorary membership 2016/2017.  Our many thanks to outgoing liaison consultants, Dr Ian Maddox and Dr Richard Riley.

The Association of Operating Theatre Practitioners is currently looking for enthusiastic members interested in assisting the executive in the running of the association.

In particular we are looking for someone to assist the Treasurer and Secretary with their workload, with a view that one day they may be interested in taking over these substantive position.

Taking a position on the executive can appear an onerous task, and this assisting role will enable those interested parties the chance to ease into the position without fear of failure in the future.

Happy Christmas in July.

Roy Wyatt,
AOTP President

Secretary Report 2015/2016

AOTPFrom Trisha Bray, 2014/2015 AOTP Secretary
I would like to thank the Current AOTP committee for your continued support this year.

We are a totally volunteer committee and we attempt to have a representative on the committee from as many hospitals as possible so we can keep all our members updated on changes, and support each other.

I have been the AOTP secretary for the past 4 and I believe it is now time for me to stand down and pass the role onto another member. At times I have confused members with my lack of “IT Experience” …. I know many members receive more than one email when I click send to early or to late, however I have thoroughly enjoyed my time on the executive committee of the AOTP.

Membership has continued to grow this year with more student and associate members.

aotpThe Association of Operating Theatre Practitioners (Inc.) is your LOCAL, (Perth-based) Western Australian Association, supporting local anaesthetia technicians, assistants to the anaesthetist and anaesthetic nurses.

The AOTP was formerly known as the WA Society of Anaesthesia Technicians (WASAT), and has been around since 1972; the name change came about in 2009, to more truly represent the changing face of the assistant to the anaesthetist, and to allow for a more diverse membership base. Membership is open to any health professional who has an interest in anaesthesia, and who wishes to expand their skills and knowledge through attendance at study days, conferences and skills workshops.

These events are provided free or at very low cost to AOTP members and are a great way to network. The AOTP also arrange to have medical companies at these events, who supply equipment for our members to try, answer questions and often these companies participate in skills workshops for our members to get 'hands-on' practice, in a relaxed and friendly environment.
